A team, along with the relationship
among the members, is the most important component of sports. The intricate
bond between team members consists of balancing respect, discipline, and dedication.
At the head of the team stands the team captain. Whether they are elected by
peers or selected by higher authority, they are the embodiment of the
expectations placed on the team as a whole. A team captain must set and lead
the example, while maintaining a strong relationship with individual members. The
power bestowed on them resides not only in their title, but also in their
character. In order for a captain to be effective and generate the necessary
solutions for the team, they must be confident, approachable and worry about
the goals of the team as a whole. Rather than worrying about their own
situations, they must maneuver and work the team so their goals are
accomplished, like having a great bond or winning a game. The dedication of a
team captain, sets the tone for the other members. If the captain is weak, the
team would suffer from an overall lack of direction and communication. It’s the
job of the captain to encourage them and work to fill any gaps in the team. The
captain must be willing to rise to the challenges and not be afraid to put
themselves out there. In the case of a slacking teammate, they must be willing
to confront the situation and exert the ability to influence the individual to
raise the bar of their performance. Team captains are the example and spirit of
the team.
